Moving to Nashville: A New Homeowner’s Guide to Music City Part Two: Nashville Neighborhoods

After you’ve decided to build your new custom built home in Nashville, the next few questions are all about neighborhoods. You’re in luck. With no shortage of eclectic neighborhoods, Nashville offers a place for everyone, no matter where you are looking in the city.

Downtown and the Surrounding Areas

If you’re looking for a location close to all of the action, then one of these neighborhoods may be just what you have in mind.

  • The Gulch – Located just south of Downtown Nashville, The Gulch is a small, upscale, trendy area that has a lot of things packed into a walkable space. There are restaurants, shops, music venues, and grocery stores. There is even a bike path and a greenway.
  • Downtown Nashville – If you want the true Nashville experience, this may be where you want to live. You can find nightly live music and everything is walkable, even though some of it might be a good distance. This is the heart of the tourist scene and great for shopping for western wear, souvenirs, and music. Because of the tight space, most Nashvillians only stop by Downtown on a visiting basis and choose to live in one of Nashville’s other amazing neighborhoods instead.
  • Melrose – Just south of Downtown, Melrose has a main road that leads into Downtown without all the hustle and bustle. It’s easily walkable and there are some amazing restaurants and bars. It is also just a short walk to Sevier Park. This neighborhood has not been completely redeveloped, so growth is expected in the coming years.
  • Demonbreun Hill – This neighborhood is located south of Downtown Nashville and adjacent to The Gulch. You’ll find a variety of restaurants and bars, most of them with an outdoor patio. This area is easily walkable and provides quick access to The Gulch, Midtown, and Downtown.
  • Midtown – If you are a lover of the culinary arts, then Midtown is the area for you. Midtown has a relaxed feel and is popular with locals for the night scene.

Other Neighborhoods in Nashville

  • Hillsboro Village – This neighborhood is located ideally between Vanderbilt University and Belmont University. It’s very family friendly with single-family homes. Hillsboro Village is between Green Hills and Downtown, so it brings you close to the center of things while still being within driving distance of other areas. This neighborhood has a plethora of bars and restaurants, along with some great shopping options. It’s also home to The Belcourt Theatre, Nashville’s own nonprofit film center.
  • Green Hills – Green Hills is far south of Downtown. While you may not get to any other areas on foot easily from Green Hills, you can walk the whole area with ease. Green Hills is one of the larger areas in Nashville and has a range of attractions from boutiques to restaurants and everything in between. It is well known for its high end shopping scene. It’s also an ideal location for considering a custom designed home.
  • West End – This area is best known for Centennial Park and The Parthenon. The streets have sidewalks, so it’s easily walkable. This area offers plenty of dining and shopping options.
  • Elliston Place – Just off of the West End, this neighborhood has its own hip culture and is known for its local music venues. It’s also in close proximity to the Vanderbilt University campus.
  • Germantown – This neighborhood is one of the oldest developed neighborhoods in Nashville and is known for its annual Oktoberfest. This area has some of the city’s best restaurants, but the nightlife is mild. Germantown is near the local Farmers’ Market and the Bicentennial Capitol Mall state park.
  • Sylvan Park – This area has a strong community feel with several shops and a few restaurants, but not as many as some other communities. It would be an ideal location for a family or single person who wants a more residential area.
  • Belmont Blvd – This residential area would be a sweet spot for any local residential builder. It has sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of the road to make jogging, walking, and biking easier.
  • 12 South – This neighborhood has a great night time presence for night owls. It’s mostly a single family home area, so your new custom home will fit right in.
  • East Nashville – This is a progressive and eccentric area embraced by musicians and artists. It has undergone extreme revitalization in recent years. While it may not be the best place to build a home, it is a great neighborhood to spend time in as it has a wide variety of restaurants and shops.
